The American baritone, Kelvin Chan, is graduate of Carleton College, with a B.A. in geology (1998). He received his Master of Music degree in Voice Performance at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) and is a candidate in CCM’s Doctor of Musical Arts program.

As a singer, performer, producer, and stage director, Kelvin Chan pursues his core commitment to cultivating human connection through the arts. He is an avid performer of the operatic, concert, and recital repertoire. Recent operatic engagements include the Imperial Commissioner and Yamadori in Atlanta Symphony Orchestra's Madama Butterfly and with Houston Grand Opera, where he created the role of Goong-Goong in the HGOCo production of Courtside by Jack Perla. He has appeared with Cincinnati Opera, where he performed the role of Yamadori in Madama Butterfly, and Opera Theater of Pittsburgh, creating the role of Shi-Yin in RedDust, an opera electronica by Mathew Rosenblum. At CCM, he performed the roles of Harlekin inAriadne auf Naxos, Schaunaurd in La Bohème, and Valmont in Conrad Susa’s The Dangerous Liaisons. He performed the role of Remendado in Georges Bizet's Carmen with 2005 Regional Theatre Tony Award-winning Theatre de la Jeune Lune in Minneapolis, MN, and reprised that role with the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
On the concert stage, Kelvin Chan has performed as a soloist in J.S. Bach's Cantatas BWV 56 and BWV 82 and St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem, Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, Gabriel Fauré's Requiem, Haydn's Harmoniemesse and Lord Nelson Mass, and W.A. Mozart's Requiem.
For five years, Kelvin Chan performed with the all-male chamber vocal ensemble, Cantus, and served as that ensemble’s Artistic Co-Director. With Cantus, he performed concerts and conducted workshops in 46 of the contiguous 48 states. He recorded five albums with that ensemble and his recording of Charles Villiers Stanford’s Songs of the Sea appears on Cantus’s 2006 album, "There Lies the Home".
Kelvin Chan is an avid recitalist, with a particular interest in modern and contemporary American art song. His program with pianist Jennifer McGuire, entitled American Portraits/Echoes of American Dreams, has been featured on theMusic on the Avenue Series at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Bellevue, KY and at Johns Island Presbyterian Church in Johns Island, South Carolina. He is a former member of the GRAMMY®-nominated Trinity Wall Street Choir, with whom he has appeared as a featured soloist and currently sings with the renowned Saint Thomas Choir of Men & Boys. He is the Founding General Director of Vital Opera.
Recent projects include György Kurtág's Kafka Fragments, Part I (director) on the 2014 Resonant Bodies Festival, Brian Fennelly’s Sacred Songs (baritone) with the New York New Music Collective, and a developmental workshop for Coal: The Musical (actor). Other recent solo engagements include appearances with the Tri-Centric Foundation in the origin performance of Anthony Braxton’s opera, Trillium J, with Schlüterwerke (Vienna, Austria), Ostrava Days (Ostrava, Czech Republic), the SEM Ensemble, Bard SummerScape, Manhattan Concert Productions, One Quiet Plunge, New York City Opera’s VOX Festival, and Trinity Church’s Concerts Bach at One Series. He appeared in Opera Moderne’s critically-acclaimed production of Der Kaiser von Atlantis, and gave a lecture recital on Hanns Eisler’s Hollywood Songbook on that company’s Red Scare series. His production of Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda won 2nd Place in the 2010 National Opera Association Opera Production Awards (Category III). Other appearances include the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and Dayton Philharmonic. Mr. Chan sang baritone and served as co-artistic director of the male vocal ensemble, Cantus. |
