The French counter-tenor, Paulin Bündgen, graduated from the Lyons Conservatoire (CNSM) and went on to study with Marie-Claude Vallin, Dominique Vellard and Isabelle Eschenbrenner.
Paulin Bündgen has worked with the Baroque orchestra Les Agrémens and the ensembles Doulce Mémoire (Denis Raisin-Dadre), La Fenice (Jean Tubéry), les Jardins de Courtoisie (Anne Delafosse-Quentin), Gli Angeli Genève (Stephan MacLeod), l'ensemble William Byrd (Graham O'Reilly), le Concert Spirituel (Hervé Niquet), Akadémia (Françoise Lasserre), les Paladins (Jérôme Corréas), le Concert de l'Hostel-Dieu (Franck-Emmanuel Comte), Elyma (Gabriel Garrido), Vox Luminis (Lionel Meunier), Clément Janequin (Dominique Visse), Clématis and les Traversées Baroques.
Paulin Bündgen has appeared at many festivals, including Ambronay, la Chaise-Dieu, Beaune, Lyons, Uzès, Pontoise, Hardelot, Monaco, Bach Festival Lausanne, Julita (Sweden), Utrecht (Netherlands), Fez (Morocco), Innsbruck (Austria), the Flanders Festival in Antwerpen (Belgium), Warsow (Polland), Torroella (Spain), and at prestigious venues in Paris (Cité de la Musique, Salle Gaveau, Châtelet Theâtre), Metz (Arsenal), Lyon (Opéra National), Bilbao (Teatro Arriaga), Rouen, Reims, Rennes, Massy (Opéras), Namur (Théâtre Royal), English National Opera in London and so on. He has sung in France, Belgium, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Russia, UK, Polland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Austria, Monaco, Morocco, the Nehterlands, Portugal, Spain, Latvia, Israel, Sweden, Taïwan, Turquey and USA.
In opera, Paulin Bündgen has sung the parts of Mercurio in Landi's La Morte d'Orfeo (conducted by Françoise Lasserre), Cirilla in Cavalli's Gli Amori di Dafne e Appollo (conducted by Gabriel Garrido), and Endimione in Cavalli's la Calisto (conducted by Stephan MacLeod), Ottone in l’Incoronazione di Poppea by Monteverdi), Zephyr in Apollo et Hyacinthus by W.A. Mozart, staged by Christophe Rauck, André Fornier, Alain Perroux, Pierre-Alain Four (Opera Houses of Versailles, Rennes, Massy, Royal Opera House in Namur, Grand Théâtre de Reims or Salle Gaveau in Paris).
Paulin Bündgen is also very keen on contemporary music and has performed works (including first performances) by Baboni-Schilingi, Nyman, Charpentier, Bryars, Charpy, Wallen... He worked in close collaboration with the composer Jean-Philippe Goude, and recorded «Aux Solitudes», a CD of works composed for him by Goude. Bündgen is the author of the album of electronic music Étrange Septembre published in 2007.
Paulin Bündgen founded his own group in 1999, l’ensemble Céladon, specialized in performing music from the Middle-ages, Renaissance and Baroque periods, which the recordings are unanimously greeted by the press. With this group, he recorded for Arion: Soledad tenguo de ti (Portuguese Renaissance music), Absalone ed altre cantate (vocal works by Cazzati); Zig Zag Territoires: Funeral teares by John Coprario; Aeon: Deo Gratias Anglia (middle-ages English music); Ricercar: Nuits Occitanes (troubadours’ songs). Paulin Bündgen and l'ensemble Céladon will collaborate with world-famous british composer Michael Nyman in 2016.
His curiosity drove him to sing in Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's dance-show Mea Culpa, with Turkish musician Kudsi Erguner or beside folk singer Kyrie Kristmanson.
Paulin Bündgen recorded for many labels: Ricercar, Ambronay, Cynfeirdd, Glossa, Zig Zag Territoires, K617, Bayard Musique, Arion, Aeon, Radio France… His discography includes more than thirty CD's covering a vaste repertoire, from medieval songs to contemporary music. |
