Santa Bulatova (Soprano)

Born: 1987 - Riga, Latvia

The Latvian soprano, Santa Bulatova, began her studies at the Jūrmala Music Middle School as a cellist in 1993 when she was just 6 years old. At age 15, she switched to choral conducting and graduated in 2002. She then studied at Jūrmala Music High School/Grammar School of Nordic Language (2002-2006). After studies of choral conducting at the Jazepa Vitola Latvijas Muzikas Akademija (2006-2009), she studied singing with Professor Regina Maciute at Latvian Academy of Music and Theater, obtaining her Bachelor of Music degree in Singing (2009-2012). In the following winter, she began her Master of Music degree in Singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg (2012-2014) in the class of Professor Geert Smits. As part of her vocal training, she participated in master-classes led by Brigitte Fassbaender, Phillip Moll, Irina Dolzhenko, Mona Julsrud, Live Jansen and Antra Bigača.

From 2006 to October 2011, Santa Bulatova has been a soloist in various projects and several times as a solo member of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival Choir. Since 2012, she is a scholarship holder of Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now and gives many solo concerts in Hamburg. In 2013, she won the sponsorship prize of the Rotary Foundation Competition in Lied Duo. She was also a soloist in Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) by J.S. Bach, which was performed in 2013 in Hamburg. Also in Hamburg she sang in 2014 George Frideric Handel's Messiah conducted by Ulrich Windfuhr. The Ensemble Barockwerk Hamburg accompanied her as a soloist in performances by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Hamburger Bürgerkapitänsmusik and Georg Philipp Telemann's Jubelmusik für die Stadt Altona. Together with the Matthias-Claudius-Kantorei and the Hamburger Barockorchester, she performed cantatas by J.S. Bach and G.P. Telemann as a soloist. She performed as a soloist in Die Israeliten in der Wüste by C.P.E. Bach together with the Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Chor Hamburg and Elbipolis Barockorchester Hamburg conducted by Hansjörg Albrecht (Hamburg, 2014). She was a soloist in Igor Stravinsky's Les Noces and C. Orff's Catulli Carmina in collaboration with the Hauptkirche St. Jacobi, directed by Rudolf Kelber (Hamburg, 2014). During the Christmas season she sang Weihnachts-Oratorium (BWV 248) by J.S. Bach; this time in Berlin with the Chor der Johanniskirche Schlachtensee and the Schöneberger Kammerorchester conducted by Stefan Rauh. Likewise, the Christmas Oratorio Das größte Kind by Johann Mattheson with the Vokalensemble St. Jacobi, Cythatra-Ensemble with authentic instrument orchestra and Rudolf Kelber as conductor were able to delight the audience. She is also a member of Chorus Musicus Köln (Director: Christoph Spering).
