The Dutch conductor, Rolf Buijs, started his musical career at an early age as a violinist, and from his tenth with orchestras. His violin teachers were Jeane Lemkes-Vos and at the Sweelinck Conservatorium in Amsterdam - Leo Boelens and Jean-Lo uis Stuurop. In 1987 he switched to orchestral conducting at the Rotterdam Conservatorium with Arie van Beek. After graduating in 1991 followed master-classes with Tsung Yeh, Yorma Panula and Victor Feldbrill, Péter Eötvös, Sir Edward Downes, Valery Gergiev and Ilja Moesin.
In 1995 Rolf Buijs won the 3rd prize of the First International Competition for Young Conductors "Lovro Matacic" in Zagreb. During his student days, he developed many management activities. In addition to assistant management, he conducted, among others, from its foundation in 1990 to 2000 the Consort de kleine Johannes (chorus & orchestra in small occupation) that included in the Purcell year a staged performance of The Tempest; and from 1993 to 2000 artistic director and conductor of the Escher Ensemble (saxophone & string quintet). Currently he is the conductor and musical director of the Haarlems Bach Ensemble and the AJO Jeugd Symfonie Orkest provincie Utrecht (Youth Symphony Orchestra). With the AJO he won the National Competition for Youth Symphony Orchestras 2009. In addition to conducting, Rolf Buijs works as superviser at the department of Concert Recordings of Concertzender and in the workshops with a theme "Klank, houding en bewegin" (sound, attitude and movement). |
