Hubert Buchberger (Violin, Conductor)

Born: 1951 - Frankfurt am Main, Hesse, Germany

The German violinist, conductor and music pedagogue, Hubert Buchberger, studied from 1970 to 1978 at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt with Heinz Stanske and Günther Weigmann violin and chamber music.

In 1974, already during his studies, Hubert Buchberger founded the Buchberger Quartet, in which he is lead violinist. The Quartet was sponsored in 1978-1979 by the Bundesauswahl Junger Künstler (National Selection of Young Artists) of the Deutschen Musikrates (German Music Council). After wining international competitions, in Portsmouth, Hannover and Evian, the Quartet has developed concert and recording activities at home and abroad. For Joseph Haydn's 200th Death in late May 2009, the Quartet made a comprehensive recording of the complete 69 works for string quartet on 23 CD's for the Dutch label Brilliant Classics. The project was recognized by the international press as an outstanding production and already won several prizes. The current members of the Buchberger quartet are: Hubert Buchberger (violin), Julia Greve (violin), Joachim Etzel (viola) and Helmut Sohler (violoncello).

In 1977, Hubert Buchberger received a teaching assignment for chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main (HfMDK Frankfurt); in 1985, he was appointed Honorary Professor; and in 1988 became full-time Professor of chamber music at the institute. From his class many concertante ensembles have emerged . From 1999 to 2002 he headed the university as Executive Vice-President; in November 2010, he was re-elected as Vice-President by the council of the university.

As a conductor, Hubert Buchberger has devoted himself alongside various guest conducting in particularly for young ensembles of all levels of quality, from Music School Orchestra to the European Union Youth Orchestra . For 37 years, from 1974 to 2011, he was Artistic Director of the Offenbacher Kammerorchester (Offenbach Chamber Orchestra), and since 1990 he has headed the Sinfonietta Frankfurt consisting of students from the Frankfurter Hochschule. After a few apprances as a guest conductor, the Collegium Musicum Aschaffenburg chose him in 2005 as its Chief Conductor. Since spring 2002, he is Resident Conductor of the Landesjugendorchesters Nordrhein-Westfalen. He has recorded with the Hessian Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Highlights of the 2011-2012 season were the ceremony and the concert for the re-opening of the Stadttheaters Aschaffenburg with the Collegium Musicum, the performances of the Verdi Requiem with three choirs from Düsseldorf, Wuppertal and Paris, soloists of the Oper Frankfurt and the Landesjugendorchester NRW; and four concerts of Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice with the Sinfonietta Frankfurt.

For about 20 years Hubert Buchberger has been president of the Mozart-Stiftung von 1838 zu Frankfurt am Main, dedicated to the promotion of young composers; he is a board member of various Frankfurt foundations that are committed to cultural and social engagements, and chairman of Behinderten-Selbsthilfe e. V., a dispatcher with twelve special vehicles and twenty full-time employees engaged in Frankfurt. He lives in Bad Vilbel.
