The Dutch mezzo-soprano, Wilke te Brummelstroete, studied at the Royal Academy of Music in The Hague where she graduated in 1990. She has taken master-classes with Kurt Equiluz and Martin Isepp at the Britten-Pears School and with Mitsuko Shirai and Hartmut Höll at the Mozarteum, Salzburg.As a soloist Wilke te Brummelstroete has sung with orchestras which include the Orchestra of the 18th Century; La Chapelle Royale Paris; Ricercar Consort, Il Fondamento; Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin; Orchester Wiener Akademie; Gulbenkian Orchestra (Lisbon); Monteverdi Orchestra; Hallé Orchestra; Dutch Radio Philharmonic Orchestra; Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra. She has worked with conductors including Frans Brüggen; Sir John Eliot Gardiner; Ton Koopman; Philippe Herreweghe; Edo de Waart; Péter Eötvös; Arnold Östman; Kent Nagano; Martin Haselböck; Christophe Rousset and Alexandru Lascae.
In the summer of 1991 Wilke te Brummelstroete made her opera debut as Dido in Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, a role in which she has subsequently performed many times with great success. In 1993 she made her debut with The Netherlands Opera in Monteverdi's L'Incoronazione di Poppea as Virtú and Pallade (director Pierre Audi), roles which she performed again in 1996. In the same opera she sang Ottavia at the Massachusetts International Festival of Arts 1996 in the USA. In Monteverdi's Il Ritorno d'Ulisse she sang the roles of Melanto, Fortuna and Anfinomo (directed by William Kentridge and Ricecar Consort) in La Monnaie Brussels, Vienna, Berlin, Amsterdam, Zürich and South Africa.In 1997 Wilke te Brummelstroete returned to The Netherlands Opera in Francis Poulenc's Dialogues des Carmélites (Robert Carsen) and in 1999 as Melanto and Fortuna (Il Ritono d'Ulisse) in Sydney. Furthermore, she has performed principle roles like Turno in the Dutch premiére of Giovanni Bononcini's Il Trionfo di Carnilla (Early Music Festival Utrecht 1997), Teseo in George Frideric Handel's Arianna (Göttingen Festival 1999 with Nicholas McGegan) Andronico in G.F. Handel's Tamerlano; Carmen in Georges Bizet's Carmen; as well as Mother Goose in The Rake's Progress by Igor Stravinsky (Independent Theatre Rotterdam and The Dutch Ballet Orchestra); The Neighbour in Mavra (I. Stravinsky, Holland Festival 1997).
Wilke te Brummelstroete interpreted La mort de Cléopatre of Berlioz in the Gergjev Festival in Rotterdam 1997 and sang Clothilde in Bellini's Norma in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw under Maurizio Barbacini in 1999. Future engagements included Juno / Ino in G.F. Handel's Semele under Nicholas McGegan in San Francisco; Ruggiero in G.F. Handel's Alcina in Göttingen 2002 (with Nicholas McGegan); concert tours with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Orchestra della Toscana under Frans Brüggen; recording J.S. Bach's Cantatas with John Eliot Gardiner (Deutsche Grammophon) and Lied recitals with Roger Vignoles.
Wilke te Brummelstroete made many recordings for radio and TV all over Europe with works of Monteverdi; J.S. Bach; G.F. Handel; Schubert; Bruno Maderna; I. Stravinsky and Grabovsky. She can also be heard on CD as Dido (Erasmus); in J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with Frans Brüggen (Philips); W.A. Mozart's Requiem; in Requiem of Maurice Duruflé (Erasmus) and with songs by Dutch composers (KRO-classics). |
