The French counter-tenor, Jean-Paul Bonnevalle, studied first psychology. He then received professional music training in the Maîtrise du Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, which allowed him partipasting in master-classes with nsuch atrtists as Sena Jurinac, Jennifer Smith, Gérard Lesne, Margreet Hönig, etc. He also worked with the soprano Gerda Hartman in Brussels and the baritone Glen Chambers in Paris.
On the stage, Jean-Paul Bonnevalle appeared in Medeamaterial by Pascal Dusapin staged by André Wilms, at the Opéra de Rouen, as well as King Arthur, The Fairy Queen and the role of the Spirit in Dido and Aeneas by Purcell under the baton of Oswald Sallaberger.
Jean-Paul Bonnevalle has performed J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243), St. John Passion (BWV 245), Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) and various cantatas and oratorios by Alessandro Scarlatti, under the direction of conductors such as Daniel Melan, Joël Suhubiette, F-E Comte, Laurence Equilbey. Les Arts Florissants under the direction of William Christie engaged him in 1999 to perform Selva Morale e Spirituale by Claudio Monteverdi in Beaune, London, Zürich. He participates regularly in productions with the Chœur de Chambre Accentus (Director: Laurence Equilbey), Les Musiciens du Louvre (Director: Marc Minkowski), Le Concert Spirituel (Director: Herve Niquet), Ensemble Baroque de Limoges (Director: Christophe Coin), Le Concert d'Astrée (Director: Emmanuelle Haïm), Ensemble Vivete Felici.
Jean-Paul Bonnevalle also performs cont contemporary music. He created the role of the Angel in the opera of Le Vase de parfums by Suzanne Giraud, staged by Olivier Py and conducted by Daniel Kawka with the Ensemble Orchestral Contemporain, and performed with Les Arts Florissants under William Christie role of La nutrice in the oratorio Il Sant’Alessio by Stefano Landi (staged by Benjamin Lazar, 2007-2008). In March 2008, he participated in the new production of Roméo et Juliette by Pascal Dusapin at the Opéra Comique staged by Ludovic Lagarde and conducted by Alain Altinoglu.
Jean-Paul Bonnevalle has recorded under the direction of Olivier Schneebeli Grands Motets by H. Dumont and P. Robert, Vêpres de l'Ascension by Foggia and Graziani for the label 'Empreinte Digitale, Stabat Mater for ten voices by Domenico Scarlatti with the ensemble Vivete Felici under the direction of G. Jourdain. |
