The American bass-baritone, Joseph Beutel, completed his undergraduate work at Western Michigan University. He earned the Heineke Scholarship award to study voice in Graz, Austria, at the American Institute of Musical Studies summer program (2005), where he participated in a series of musical theatre review performances. In the summer of 2007, he earned a Samuel Greco scholarship to participate in the coOPERAtive (2008) program at Westminster Choir College. He is a district finalist of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in 2011 and a Palm Beach Opera Vocal Competition Encouragement Award recipient in 2010 and 2011.
While studying at Western Michigan University, Joseph Beutel was involved in the stage productions of Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance (2004) as the Sergeant, Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi (2003) as Simone, and other scenes in the opera workshop program. He has also performed in Europe as a soloist in oratorio works such as Felix Mendelssohn’s Te Deum (2005), W.A. Mozart’s Mass in C Minor (2006), and Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Missa dei Filii (2006). At the Indiana University Opera Theater he performed Herr Reich (Page) in Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor by Otto Nicolai (conducted by David Effron, October 2008), the King in Cendrillon by Jules Massenet (conducted by Ronald Zollman, February 2009), Mustafà in L'Italiana in Algeri by Angelo Anelli (conducted by Arthur Fagen, September 2009), Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte by W.A. Mozart (conducted by Mark Gibson, November 2009), Vespro della Beata Vergine (1610) by Claudio Monteverdi; (conducted by William Jon Gray, February 2010), Simone in Gianni Schicchi.
In 2010, Joseph Beutel performed the role of the Impresario/Direttore in the young artist production of Viva La Mamma! at Seattle Opera. He also sang Benoit and Alcindoro in La bohème for South Texas Lyric Opera; He spent the summer of 2010 as a Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Artist, where he covered the role of Méphistophélès in Faust and the Catholic Priest in The Last Savage. In 2011, he joined the Minnesota Opera’s Resident Artist program. For the Minnesota Opera this season (2011-2012), he will appear as the British Major in Silent Night, Le Bailli in Werther, Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor and the Bonze in Madame Butterfly, and covering the role of Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. |
