Paolo Beschi (Cello)

Born: 1953 - Brescia, Italy

The Italian cellist, Paolo Beschi, studied the cello in his native Brescia before deciding to learn the techniques unique to the Baroque cello.

Since 1981 Paolo Beschi dedicates himself almost exclusively to the baroque cello. He is co-founder of La Gaia Scienza (1980) and the eminent Italian Baroque period-instrument ensemble Il Giardino Armonico (1985), in which he is the lead cellist. He teaches cello in Como, Italy, and also plays in a Baroque trio called La Gaia Scienza.

On his own, Paolo Beschi has recorded the cello suites of J.S. Bach for the Winter & Winter label, a recording that has been acclaimed by some as being among the best of these works ever made, although some others feel that it is among the worst. Nonetheless, this should give you some idea of Beschi's approach to the cello - passionate, aggressive, energetic, and intense.
