The Peruvian tenor, Enrique Bernardo, studied Piano at Escuela de Música y Arte Visión Musical (National Conservatory) in Lima, Peru (1995-2000); studied Piano Performance at College of Charleston in South Carolina (2000-2004); obtained his Master of Music degree from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2004-2006); obtained his Artist Diploma from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (2006-2008); and studied Opera at Cleveland Institute of Music (2009-2010). He counts as his most important mentors: Dr. Robert C. White, Javier Bernardo, Clifford Billions, Sari Gruber, Raymond Very in voice, Enrique Graf, David Allen Wehr, Fernando Delucchi in piano; and conducting with Grammy winner and former conductor of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, Robert Page. He won first prizes in piano competitions such as the Steinway Concert Society of Western Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Concert Society, the Third Prize (special award) at the Varna International Piano Festival and Competition in Bulgaria, the Southeastern Community College Piano Competition, the SCMTNA Piano Competition, and the American Federation of Musicians for Charleston, South Carolina.
Enrique Bernardo is following a very exciting path, maintaning a career as both tenor singer and pianist. As a tenor singer, he performed during the summer of 2009 the tenor soloist as well as being the conductor with the Latin- American Choir of Pittsburgh in La Misa Criolla by Ariel Ramirez. In the following seasons, he has performed in the USA the roles of Luiggi in Il Tabarro, Alfredo and Gastone in Traviata, Nemorino in Elixir of Love, Count Almaviva in Barber of Seville, Briguella and Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos, Don Ottavio in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Don Basilio, Don Curzio in W.A. Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, Hussar in Mavra. He has performed with Opera Western Reserve, Cleveland Institute of Music Opera Theatre and Undercroft Opera, Erie Opera Theatre, Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh and Pittsburgh Opera. During the 2011-2012 season he performed the tittle role in La Clemenza di Tito by W.A. Mozart's. Earlier in the season, he performed Cavarodossi in Tosca as part of the Opera Western Reserve Young Artist Program as well as covering the same role for the Main Stage Production.
Since the 2012-2013 season Enrique Bernardo has been part of Theater Münster in Germany. He sang there the 4th Jew in Salome by Strauss. Since starting to work in Germany, he has sung Ruiz in Il Trovatore, Zweite Priest and Erste Gerharnischter Mann in W.A. Mozart's Zauberflöte, 4th Jew in Salome. Most recently he sang Jim Mahoney during rehearsals of Rise and Fall of the city Mahagonney by Kurt Weill. He is also a sought after Oratorio singer. Recently he has performed the Tenor solos in Dvorak's Messe in D Op. 86, Franz Franz Liszt's Missa Choralis, W.A. Mozart's Missa Brevis in C und D, Christmas Oratorio by Camille Saint-Saëns, the Tenor solo in Schubert's Mass in G major, Tenor solo in Cherubini's Requiem in C minor.
Trained originally as a pianist, highlighted performances include recitals at St. James at Piccadilly in London, England, several solo recitals throughout USA such as the Piccolo Spoleto Festival as well as appearances with the National Symphony Orchestra of Peru, the College of Charleston Chamber Orchestra, and the AUO "All University Orchestra" of Carnegie Mellon University.
During the 2008-2009 season Enrique Bernardo was the principal pianist for Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh in: Djamileh by Georges Bizet (Understudy and Rehearsal pianist), Die Fledermaus by Strauss (Chorus), Porgy and Bess by Gershwin (Rehearsal pianist), and Gianni Schichi (Rehearsal pianist). 2016 marked his official return to the stage as a Concert Pianist performing Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Alte Philarmonie in Münster, as well as performing extensively in solo Piano/Tenor Recitals in Nordern Westphalia.
Enrique Bernardo currently focuses in pursuing a singing career; nevertheless, playing the piano has proven a blessing in allowing him to make a living as a full-time musician. He worked as the music director of Hebron Presbyterian Church, Clinton, Pennsylvania. He also worked as a staff accompanist for ballet and voice lessons for Point Park University, Piano instructor at the Carnegie Mellon Pre-College program, the Carnegie Mellon Preparatory Music School as well as Musik Innovations Music School (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA). |
