The Russian violinist, Pavel Berman, entered the Central Music School of the Moscow Conservatory, studying with Igor Bezrodniy at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory. At the age of 7 made his public debut with the Gorky Philharmonic Orchestra and went on to develop a wide repertoire, performing through the Soviet Union, giving recitals and appearing with the USSR State Symphony Orchestra, the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras. At the age of 17, he had won the Second Prize at the 1987 Paganini International Violin Competition in Genoa, Italy. He attracted the international attention when won the First Price and Gold Medal at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis in 1990. The jury acknowledged his style as a blend of sparkling technique and refined interpretation; the audience recognized his classy personality and sincerity in music-making. The Indianapolis Awards for the best performance of Paganini Caprices and of Ysaye Sonata opened the way to his first CD, recorded a few months later with Koch International. While performing internationally, he moved in 1992 on to study with Dorothy DeLay at the Juilliard School in New York where he met Isaac Stern, an encounter that undoubtedly and profoundly marked his musical creativity. Yet, his musical maturity finds its deepest roots in his life-long work with his father, the legendary pianist Lazar Berman.
Developing his international career, Pavel Berman has appeared as a soloist and/or conductor with such orchestras as Italian Virtuosi, Moscow Virtuosi, Mantua Chamber Orchestra, Haydn and Bolzano Orchestra, Toscanini Symphony of Parma, Verona Symphony Orchestra, Genoa Theatre Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI of Turin, La Fenice Orchestra of Venice, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Prague Philarmonie Orchestra, Prague Symphony, Romanian National Radio Orchestra, Portuguese National Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Lisboa Theatre, Wurtembergische Philharmonie Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle, Berliner Symphoniker, Vilnius Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Miami Philharmonic, Beijing Philharmonic, etc. He has reached audiences at the Carnegie Hall in New York, Théâtre des Champs Elysées and Salle Gaveau in Paris, Herkulessaal in Munich, Auditorio Nacional in Madrid, Bunkakaikan in Tokyo, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Conservatorio Verdi in Milan, Parco della Musica in Rome, Palais des Beaux Arts in Brussels and others, as well as involvement in numerous music festivals.
Over the last years, Pavel Berman has been devoting much attention both as a conductor of chamber orchestra and symphony orchestra and as a performer, specially with the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra, the Lithuanian Orchestra, la St. Georges Strings Orchestra and the Moscow Virtuosi. He founded the Kaunas Chamber Orchestra in Lithuania in 1998, which became Symphony Orchestra and was Musical Director of the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra (1998-2006). In May 2007, he has inaugurated a David Oistrakh Festival in great violinist’s native town of Odessa.
In 2009-2010, Pavel Berman appeared as a soloist and conductor with such orchestras as the Mantua Chamber Orchestra, Toscanini of Parma, Genoa Theatre Orchestra, Moscow Virtuosi, Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Prague Philarmonie Orchestra, Romanian National Radio Orchestra, Portuguese National Symphony Orchestra, Wurtembergische Philharmonie Orchestra, as well as with a number of Russian and Italian orchestras. Among the other projects, he performed a recital tour in Japan in 2010-2011 as well as a tour in Italy as a soloist and conductor with the Mantua Chamber Orchestra. He also appeared as a soloist with La Fenice Orchestra of Venice under Yutaka Sado and as a conductor with Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI of Turin.
In the next concert seasons Pavel Berman is going to appear as a soloist and/or conductor with such orchestras as Toscanini in Parma, Carlo Felice Theatre of Genova, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, OSI of Lugano, Lithuanian National Chamber Orchestra, Moscow Virtuosi, Moscow Symphony Orchestra, Prague Symphony Orchestra, Romanian National Radio Orchestra, Portuguese National Symphony Orchestra, as well as with a number of Russian and Italian orchestras.
Pavel Berman has recorded for Koch International, Audiofon, Discover, Supraphon, Phoenix Classics and Dynamic. After recording the Prokofiev Violin Sonatas and 5 Melodies with pianist Vardan Mamikonian, he completed a Prokofiev project with Dynamic by recording both violin concertos with Radio Orchestra of Lugano under Andrey Boreyko. He also recorded a Robert Schumann sonata with Alexander Mikhailuk, works by Bloch and Dmitri Shostakovich with Anne Epperson, and the W.A. Mozart and L.v. Beethoven Sonatas with his father Lazar Berman. Mr. Berman also recorded a video rendition of Paganini 24 Caprices in double version: for violin solo on Guarneri del’Gesu ex-Cesoul and a exclusive Violin and String Orchestra version by Giedrius Kuprievicius on Stradivari “Marèchal Berthier.”
Pavel Berman teaches in Lugano and performs on the Antonio Stradivari violin, Cremona 1702 ‘ex David Oistrach’ lent to him by the Pro Canale Foundation, Milan. He also plays the Antonio Stradivari violin, 1716 ‘Maréchal Berthier’, ex Napolèon belonging Pro Canale Foundation, Milan. He currently lives in Milan, Italy. |
