The Canadian-born mezzo-soprano, Kelly Baxter Golding, has been a choral performer since her teens. She studied at the University of Toronto - University of Trinity College (Bachelor of Arts, Distinction, Economics and East Asian Studies: 1987-1992); Osaka Foreign Languages University (Advanced Certificate in Japanese Language, Japanese: 1992-1993); MBA (Aoyama Gakuin University) (Business: 1994-1996, Thesis Title: Epistemological Types Among Expatriate Managers in the Tokyo Environment: an analysis of the cultural and personality factors affecting the profile of logical types among German, French, British, American and Canadian managers living and working in Japan; recipient of Monbusho (Japanese Ministry of Education) Research & Degree Program Fellowship covering tuition & living expenses)
Kelly Baxter has experience in styles ranging from original notation chant to new music, and has appeared as a soloist with many groups in her native Canada, but her passion is for small ensemble singing and the early repertoire, particularly Renaissance and Baroque. Kelly spent a number of years living and studying in Japan, and was a member of Tokyo’s acclaimed Baroque ensemble Bach Collegium Japan (Director: Masaaki Suzuki) when it launched its cantata recording series on the BIS label.
Kelly Baxter studied voice with Carol Forte in Toronto and with Cornelius Reid in New York. She has studied with Benjamin Bagby of the Sequentia Ensemble for Medieval Music, and has performed with Toronto-based groups Sine Nomine, Opera Atelier and Tafelmusik. She has indulged a secret love of music theater with forays into Sondheim and summer workshops - but she generally keeps pretty quiet about that (much the way she attempts to cover up her near-obsessive dedication to proper spelling and grammar in written communications!).
After her relocation to New York, Kelly Baxter scaled back on outside commitments for several years to devote time to a new role: mother to sons Jamie and AJ. She is delighted to be getting out more again, particularly with Choral Chameleon, with which she is an alto. Since she somehow acquired a business degree in her travels, one of Kelly’s other hats is that of arts administrator; past clients include the Elora Festival Singers and the Exultate Chamber Singers.
Kelly Baxter worked as Analyst in Accenture, Toronto, Canada (1996-1999); Operations Manager in Exultate Chamber Singers (1999-2003); Partner in Opus One Arts Management Group (September 2001-June 2006); Bookkeeper/Consultant (Volunteer) in Choral Chameleon in New York City (September 2008-October 2011); Parent Coordinator in Brooklyn School of Inquiry in New York (October 2009-October 2012); Senior Financial Analyst in TNTP Brooklyn, New York (October 2012-December 2014); Finance Manager in TNTP (since December 2014). |
