The Italian mezzo-soprano, Romina Basso, studied at the Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello in Venice, and obtained her degree in Italian Literature from Trieste University. She has taken part in master-classes with Peter Maag, Regina Resnik, Rockwell Blake, Claudio Desderi, Elio Battaglia and Claudio Strudthoff, specialising in Baroque repertory and Rossini. She won prizes at many national and international competitions, includiong Seghizzi, Palma d'Oro, Città di Conegliano, Modena Musica, Toti dal Monte, Associazione Lirica Concertistica Italiana, Operalia Placido Domingo.
Romina Basso regularly performs in Italy, throughout Europe, and worldwide, collaborating with orchestras and ensembles such as Accademia Bizantina, Concerto Italiano (Director: Rinaldo Alessandrini), Il Complesso Barocco, Cappella della Pietà de’ Turchini, Le Concert des Nations, Europa Galante, Ensemble 415, Ensemble Matheus, Les Arts Florissants, Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble, The King's Consort, Modo Antiquo, Münchner Rundfunkorchester, Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, Ricercar Consort, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, ORT, Venice Baroque Orchestra, and Ensemble Zefiro (Director: Alfredo Bernardini). Among the prominent conductors with whom she has sung are Peter Maag, Marcello Viotti, Sir Charles Mackerras, Vladimir Jurowski, Kazushi Ono, Jordi Savall, Frans Brüggen, Alan Curtis, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Fabio Biondi, Marc Minkowski, William Christie, Emmanuelle Haïm, Paul McCreesh, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Philippe Pierlot, Andrea Marcon, Ottavio Dantone, Robert King, Antonio Florio, Federico Maria Sardelli, Daniele Gatti, and Gabriele Ferro.
Romina Basso specializes in performance of Baroque music and of Rossini's ouvre. She performs in the most distinguished concert halls in Europe, Asia (Japan) and Australia, as well as taking part in festivals (Speer Festival, Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Edinburgh Festival, Utrecht Early Music Festival); she has also been hosted several times in Kraków (Misteria Paschalia and the Opera Rara series). She enjoys the trust of great artists. She has been invited to collaborate with such conductors as Peter Maag (Charles Gounod's Faust), Jordi Savall (C. Monteverdi's Orfeo and Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi), Alan Curtis (Antonio Vivaldi's Motezuma, George Frideric Handel's Rodelinda, Tolomeo and Berenice), Rinaldo Alessandrini (Alessandro Scarlatti's La Vergine dei dolori), Fabio Biondi (A. Scarlatti's La Santissima Annunziata, A. Vivaldi's Bajazet, W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte), Emmanuelle Haïm (G.F. Handel's Il Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno), Marc Minkowski (Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's Stabat Mater) and Laurence Cummings (G.F. Handel's Giulio Cesare), Andrea Marcon, Ottavio Dantone and Paul McCreesh.
In March of this year, Romina Basso appeared at the Parisian Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in A. Vivaldi's opera Orlando furioso under the direction of Jean-Christophe Spinosi, which was later performed in a concert version at the Barbican Centre in London and at a festival in Amsterdam. In the most immediate future, she will be working with the Venice Baroque Orchestra - she is preparing a solo part in G.B. Pergolesi's Stabat Mater as well as works by A. Vivaldi which will comprise the program for a concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
Romina Basso most often records Baroque repertoire (works by G.F. Handel and A. Vivaldi) for, among other labels, Naive, Deutsche Grammophon and EMI/Virgin Classics. Last year, she took part in a recording of A. Vivaldi's Ercole su'l Termodonte with Europa Galante and Fabio Biondi, as well as G.F. Handel's Berenice under the direction of Alan Curtis.
