The American tenor, Andrew Barrett, studied at Newark High School (Class of 1987). He obtained his Bachelor of Music (1993) and Master of Music (1999) degrees in Vocal Performance and his DMA in Vocal Performance (2009) from the University of Minnesota. He has studied abroad at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with French baritone, Gérard Souzay, and received a fellowship to study with Håkan Hagegård at the Hagegarden, in Gunnarsbyn, Sweden.
Andrew Barrett has sung many roles of the bel canto and lyric repertoire, including Count Almaviv in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflote, and Ernesto in Don Pasquale. With Opera in the Ozarks, Andrew has performed the leading tenor role of Mr. Owen in Argento's Postcard from Morocco, the comic role of Dr. Blind in Die Fledermaus, the title role in Orpheus in the Underworld, Maximillian, in House of the Sun, and Remendado in Georges Bizet's Carmen, as well as Tamino in 2005. While at the University of Minnesota, he performed the leading roles of Der Tanzmeister in Ariadne auf Naxos the title role of Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring, and Danceny, Dangerous Liaisons. He has been seen as a soloist with the College of St. Catherine’s Choral Society in George Frideric Handel's Messiah, J. Haydn's The Lord Nelson Mass, and The Seasons.
Regionally, Andrew Barrett has performed with the Minot Symphony Orchestra (J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245)) and has been tenor soloist in J.S. Bach's Mass in B Minor (BWV 232) and W.A. Mozart's Coronation Mass with Exultate Chamber Choir & Orchestra (Director: Thomas D. Rossin), with whom he is Assistant Conductor (since September 2004) and Tenor Section Leader.
Andrew Barrett has his own Voice Studio (since 1995) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he gives individual voice lessons. He worked at Marriott International (February 1992-2000), and also taught at Anoka Ramsey Community College (September 2000-August 2002). In addition to taking part in nearly thirty productions in the ensemble with the Minnesota Opera, he was also a soloist with the Minnesota Opera preview tour. Currently, beside his teaching and singing schedule, he directs EverBlest, a youth choir based in Cambridge, Minnesota. He married Wendy Rae Waszut-Barrett on September 11, 1993.
