Since its founding in 1938 by Hermann Müller, the Berner Kammerorchester (= BKO; Berne Chamber Orchestra) has been cultivating the classical repertoire and at the same time placing a focus on the performance and communication of new Swiss music. Noteworthy are the exciting combinations with other areas such as dance, folk music and jazz. After Hermann Müller's age-related resignation, the BKO was under the direction of Jean-Pierre Moeckli (1973-1992). Since the 2012-2013 season Philippe Bach is chief conductor of the BKO.
Numerous world premieres by well-known composers were produced, such as by Sandor Veress, Albert Moeschinger, Willy Burkhard, Arthur Furer and Alfred Zimmerlin. In addition to concerts with renowned soloists such as Patricia Kopatchinskaja, Thomas and Patrick Demenga, Mirijam Contzen or Julia Schröder, co-operation with young talents is an important concern of the BKO. The Hochschule der Künste Bern as a partner specifically supports young artists. The BKO is a welcome guest at various festivals and is present with guest performances throughout Switzerland.
The BKO is supported by the City of Bern, the Burgergemeinde Bern, the Canton of Bern and the Regionalkonferenz Bern Mittelland and receives funding from various foundations and partners. |
