The Norwegian conductor, Alf Årdal, studied violin with Arve Tellefsen and Camilla Wicks and conducting with Arvid Fladmoe at the Norges musikkhøgskole (Music Academy) in Oslo. During his studies he directed the Canticum Novum kammerorkester.
Alf Årdal began his professional career as a violinist in the Norske Kammerorkester (Norwegian Chamber Orchestra). After further conducting studies in Salzburg with Otmar Suitner, and at Loma Linda University with Herbert Blomstedt, he has worked with the leading Norwegian orchestras, including the Oslo-Filharmonien (Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra).
At Den Norske Opera (the Norwegian National Opera) Alf Årdal has conducted opera and ballet performances, including Boris Godunov, and Swan Lake and at the Riksoperaen Egil Hovlands (National Opera Egil Hovland) the church opera Fange og fri.
Alf Årdal has guest conducted in Scandinavia, and at festivals in Europe and South Korea, and made recordings released on Simax and BIS. In recent years he has led a series of workshops in Germany and Switzerland. He teaches at the Barratt Due Institute of Music and is Artistic Director of Sinfonia
