Der Aachener Domchor (The Aachener Cathedral Choir) (= ADC) can look back on more than 1200 years of history. Its establishment goes back on the Aachener Hofschule "Schola Palatina", which was founded by Karl the Great scholar Alkuin von York. Since that time the choir in traditional occupation with boys and men makes music along the centuries in the famous Pfalzkapelle Karl the Great, and is thus the oldest boy choir in Germany. Emperor Karl requested to restructure the church singing within Roman Liturgy in the Frankish tradition from Aachen. Today the ADC still performs authentically this kind of singing, called Gregorian Chant.
Outstanding, musical high points over the centuries, since the King Coronation in Aachen, are the Karl Festival and the sanctifying tours. In more recent time also the performances of the Bach Passions on Passion Sunday and the big oratorios in the so-called October Music, which reminds annually since 1945 in gratitude of the end of war in Aachen. Until today the ADC fulfils these high requirements and far more than that, by the usual Sundays and holiday services, and employment for the Musica Scara in Bistum Aachen. At the high-points of the church year as well as in the Advents and Fasting time the ADC performs Latin Vespergottesdienste.
Many CD recordings, participation in broadcast and television programmes, as well as numerous tours document the extraordinary rank of the ADC. Big names, as for example, Schindler, Böckler, Nekes, Rehmann and Pohl stood for continuity of the music in the "Klingenden Kathedrale". The music in the Aachen's Cathedral would like to form a bridge in Liturgy and concert in interaction with architecture and art to the hearts of humans. |
