Introduction to BWV 98 -- Was Gott tut, das ist wohlgetan
Weekly reminder:
This week we continue Trinity season cantatas with BWV 98, the third of four works for the 21st Sunday after Trinity. Details of text, commentary, recordings, and previous discussion for this week are accessible via: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/BWV98.htm
The commentary by Julian Mincham, music examples included, is especially recommended as an introduction to listening.
The BWV 98 page has convenient access to notes from the Gardiner, Koopman (notes by Christoph Wolff), Suzuki, and Leusink (and more!) CD issues, via link beneath the cover photo. Note that BWV 98 was the first cantata selected by Sigiswald Kuijken for the beginning (2004) of his ongoing (we can only hope!) series of OVPP releases on the Accent label.
The chorale text and melody are accessible via links at the BWV 98 page. This important tune and text was set more than once by Bach; a bit of investigation will reward the diligent student. Francis Browne has recently added new commentary on the cantata texts to his interlinear translations, linked via [English 3]. We can expect these to continue, not necessarily weekly. Douglas Cowling and William L. Hoffman are also posting relevant to chorales and other music for the Lutheran Church Year, accessible via LCY pages.
I do not always take the time to check all links before posting. Special thanks to the folks who provide timely corrections. |

I was saddened to learn recently of the death of Margaret Greentree last August.
Reflecting this week's scheduled discussion, I offer an arrangement of her BWV 98 MIDI file. I set this for organ with contrasting Gedackt and 'Organo pleno' on different keyboards (two organists would be needed to perform this live) - the tempo and fermata are as she chose them: http://youtu.be/EgCmV_Z5lps |
