Introduction to BWV BWV 74 -- Wer mich liebet, der wird mein Wort halten
This weeks discussion continues the ongoing series of cantatas spanning from Easter to Ascension, Pentecost, and Trinity. With BWV 74, we have the third work for Whit Sunday (Pentecost), among the large group of works for the three-day Whit festival which will be the focus of our weekly discussions for a couple of months, through the week of March 13.
Details of text, commentary, recordings, and previous discussion are accessible via: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/BWV74.htm
That page also has convenient access to Gardiners notes to the pilgrimage CDs, by clicking on the PDF link under the picture of the CD cover.
The link to commentary by Julian [Mincham} is especially recommended as an introduction to listening. Julians essays detail the relation between BWV 74 and last weeks BWV 59.. |

I don't see a PDF link beneath the photos of the CD covers on the BCML page.Am I looking in the right place? |

[To Douglas Cowling] The PDF link to Gardiner notes is not on the BCW home page, but at the BWV 74 page, including discography: http://www.bach-cantatas.com/BWV74.htm
In light blue, and easily overlooked, but I find it very handy now that I have discovered it. The hard copy with the CDs is white on black, very fine print (at least to this Old Dude). The on-line notes are much easier to read. |

[To Aryeh Oron] Thanks for the clarification. It was my oversight not to check this detail before posting my brief (and hasty) introduction late last evening. By the time I responded to Doug, the link was there.
Very useful, by the way, as well as the links to Julian Minchams essays. |

Scroll down to the Gardiner recording, and there is a light blue PDF link under the photo of the CD. The notes are also available directly from Gardiners website: www.solideogloria.co.uk but the route from the home page is a bit arcane: click to recordings, click on the cover picture of the CD you want. As best I can tell, if you cannot connect the notes you seek by picture, you are out of luck.
From the next screen choose an ikon for language, which does not exactly indicate that it is a link to the notes. Unless I overlooked something, the most difficult step is knowing the cover picture of the CD you want! It took me a while to realize that the initial motivation for posting the notes on-line was to appease folks who complained about the difficulty of reading the small white-on-black text provided with the CDs. Alas, folks who have difficulty with that text are likely to have at least as much difficulty with the click-through procedure, even if they know the cover picture (because they own the CD).
They are worth seeking out, and definitely available on-line. If you do not find them, keep asking, and we will figure it out. |
