I did read a book (not translated into English so far) written by one of the greatest organ builders of J S BACH's time:Karl Joseph Riepp. He mentions that the art of registration is like the culinary art or cooking if you like:he compares the stops with foods to be used and later with wines too!! May be our expert in this (T. Braatz?) can get a hand to this book find the text and translate for all...???

Neither the MGG or New Grove know anything about this mysterious book by Karl Joseph Riepp, whose connection with Bach is not documented.

Thanks. This book, along with others, was listed in MGG and New Grove the bibliographies that follow the article on Riepp, but this did not appear to be a book by Riepp. No mention of the 'culinary art of registration' is made in either article. Since you seem to have the book at hand, how does the author establish a connection with Bach? Through a member of the extensive Silbermann family?

Now that I remember it is not by Riepp the title is:

Karl Joseph Riepp die Orgelbauer von Ottobeuren. I was in Munich making my studies in the 1970's and now that I am 53 I am loosing slowly the memory. But thanks a lot it was not by Riepp , it was about Riepp, I may have made some xerox copies but I can not find them, Sorry...

I was confused between that one and another called:

KARL JOSEPH RIEPP DER ORGELBAUER VON OTTOBEUREN
BY Hermann Meyer, Kassel,Baerenreiter , 1938...

Years pass some things leave our mind but when you walk into the Basilika of Ottobeuren and hear the 3 organs inside, you can never forget that... The beauty is incomparable. Karl Richter gave concerts there for over 20 years. Prof.Gunther Ramin and Piltzer too.I have a small book that they sell in the bookshop of the Basilika with all the history of concerts and recitals and also pictures of famous organists that played there. Richter gave concerts there too,he liked that place very much. SOmetimes with choir and orchestra sometimes organ alone.He recorded ther too for Telefunken.

Other important organists did too: Edgar Krapp winner of the Munich Orgelwettbewerb 1972 Franz Lehrendorfer, organist at the Munich Catherdral and organ Professor of the Musikhochschule.

[To Thomas Braatz] I got the book for the Bayerisches Staatsbibliothek I do not own the book.I was studing and Riepp was an obligatory subject as well as the organbuilding in Swabia (has German and French influences together!!) But if one day you go to MUnich you may be able to check it out.

I may go there soon,but it depends of factors not under my control.

[To Thomas Braatz] There is no direct connection with Bach. Riepp has studied by Johann Andreas Silbermann, according the Pariser Silbermannarchiv. There are also strong connections with Dom Bedos and Riepp.
