Type:

Bach Statue/Monument

Title:

First Ohrdruf Bach Monument (Bachdenkmal)

Description:

Bach Monument
Location: Michaelisplatz, near the Tower of the St. Michael's Church (Der Turm der St. Michaeliskirche), Ohrdruf, Thuringis, Germany

The Bach Monument commemorates the time of J.S. Bach in Ohrdruf here. It was created by a project group of the adjacent Michaelis School (Michaelisschule) as part of a symposium at the forge Tobiashammer near Ohrdruf. It shows both the tower of the former St. Michael's Church, where the young J.S. Bach learned to play the organ. The orignal quarry stone and pipe organ, which were incorporated into the sculpture, symbolizing the history of St. Michael's Church (Michaelkirche).
The lattice window with the music paper alludes to an anecdote: So it is said that his older brother Johann Christoph Bach [22] withheld from him some pieces of music, as he considered this to be too heavy for his younger brother. But the young Johann Sebastian was not deter and night after night copied secretly the sheet music to his notebook.
The monument is completed by a banner with a quote that highlights the richness and meaning of his life's work:

Nicht Bach, Meer sollte er heißen." Ludwig van Beethoven
("Not Bach, the sea, he should read."
Ludwig van Beethoven)

In May 1999, the monument was officially unveiled and presented.
