In this oil painting, which is a pendant of “Bach, Toccata and Fugue” (see: Art-1818) the portrait of the composer dominates the scene. Bach looks at us with his well know bewigged, wide face with ruddy cheeks. In the bottom left corner floats a medallion with his portrait. He is surrounded by elements from the kind of churches were he played his famous organ works, like sculptures (an angel with a violin), organ pipes, arches and flying putti. A man with a cane on a park bench near a wrought iron gate gazes at a baroque town in the distance, with a domed church (slightly reminiscent of the Dom in Aachen (Germany), where the artist listened to Bach’s concertos), a bridge, an opera house with statues on the roof and tall, clear, arched windows. |
