About the Artist:
Mark Steele's journey as an artist is a story filled with creative forces that shaped and determined his direction long before he was born. "My grandfather was William L. Steele, a meticulous architect and draftsman, who worked in the studios of Louis Sullivan along side Frank Lloyd Wright."
Raised in an artistic family, Mark Steele's father, Philip J. Steele, was a well known artist and instructor in Painting and Anatomy who founded the Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design in Denver, Colorado. "I was raised in an atmosphere filled with drawing, painting and music."
Steele has held on to the tradition of draftsmanship and creativity that are the hallmarks of some of his favorite artists who include: Daumier, Rembrandt, Toulouse-Lautrec, Van Gogh, Rodin and Thomas Rowlandson.
Born in New York City and raised in Denver, Steele received a fine arts degree from Boston University and began a career as a political cartoonist. "After Nixon left the White House, I felt that it would probably be decades before such a distinctive cast of characters would cross my drawing board again, and so I ventured into the broader area of illustration."
For years, Steele has worked in his Boston studio, creating commissioned artwork as well as his own personal drawings paintings and sculpture. "The Romance Series" is a new group of watercolors that take their title from one of Steele's lifelong themes. "I am a passionate observer of the sexes. This will always be at the forefront of my work." Steele is currently working on a show of these original works, to be announced in 2001.
Steele continues to accept commissions. His most recent clients include the Dali Restaurant in Somerville, Mass. where he created a large three-dimensional painting. Numerous major publications constantly display his vibrant illustrations. A massive 20 piece sculpture commission for the Paris Hotelier Accor, was a tremendous showcase in their annual report. Steele also exhibited the entire sculpture series in two special shows on the Bois de Boulogne and Champs-Elysés.
His new Bathers Series is a limited edition set of ten sculptures that are hand cast and hand painted by the artist, and offered exclusively through this web site. They present the art collector with a rare opportunity to invest in a Steele original at a very reasonable cost. His Composers Series as well as Painters Series, also allow the collector to purchase original signed posters of these compelling dioramas. Plans are taking place for a new series of Lithographs to be published by Steele in 2001.
The 21st Century has opened up new challenges for creativity in the arts, and Mark Steele plans on being at the worldwide forefront of visual innovation.
