Artist Statement:
My art work is rooted in a visual exploration of how various systems of thought interact, resulting in dynamic tensions between intuition and analysis that provide insight into an expanded experience of space and time . This investigation has led to my contemplation of music as an example of a very highly structured art form, in which a linear sequence of notes is communicated to the performer through a very abstract form of notation, and it occurred to me that this process was very similar to my approach to art, as a series of forms and colors, replete with potential meaning and possibilities. By translating the transitory nature of music into a spatial syntax of form and color the musical composition becomes metaphorically re-defined as a spatial concept to be experienced in another dimension. To explore further how the means to communicate music might be perceived from a more immediate sensory experience involving form and color, I selected the music of J.S. Bach for its sense of intricately structured contrapuntal qualities, and for my strong feelings for his music. This series of work consists of twelve drawings derived from Bach's Two Part Inventions and three drawings from the Well Tempered Clavier, for a total of fifteen pieces. These works express an immediate sensory form of musical notation, whereby the complex chromatic patterns of rhythm, harmony, and color can be experienced visually. Bach's music follows a structural regimen that seemingly transcends conceptual constraints, with a wholeness and sense of the infinite that suggest a timeless quality. As such, the visual expressions of his music embody a sense of mystery that may be perceived over time as a living experience.
