The Austrian composer, Gregor Joseph Werner, was Haydn's immediate predecessor as Kapellmeister to Prince Esterhazy, his appointment dating from May 10, 1728. In 1761 Haydn became vice-Kapellmeister, but Werner retained his place to the time of his death.
Gregor Joseph Werner was a prolific and talented composer, who wrote 18 oratorios, over 40 masses, 3 Requiems and a large quantity of other church music, symphonies and sonatas for 2 violins and bass, a string quartet, 2 pastorellas for 2 violins, harpsichord and organ, etc, Haydn arranged six of his fugues for string quartet, adding an introduction to each, and published them through Artaria. |
