Georg Thym (Hymn-writer)

Born: 1520 - Zwickaum Saxony, Germany
Died: December 21, 1561 - Lutherstadt, Wittenberg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

Georg Klee, commonly called Georg Thymus [Thym], was a German pedagogue, poet and author. He was a student the German Lutheran reformer Philipp Melanchthon, the closest collaborator with Martin Luther. He then worked as a teacher and psalmist. He was the rector in Zwickau in 1548, in Goslar 1549 and then in Wernigerode until 1558 when he was appointed Professor in Wittenberg. He died in Lutherstadt, Wittenberg in 1561.

Saxony-Anhalt is represented in both Swedish and Danish hymn books. Among other things, the Danish Psalm Book for Church and Home and in Swedish Psalm Books with the Psalm Vänd bort din vrede (Turn away your anger), for which his Latin Aufer immensam, Deus and German Wend ab deinen Zorn texts are model. For example, a Swedish translation is found in the Gothenburg Book of Psalm 1650.
