Martin Tesmer was born the son of Johann Tesmer (brandy distiller in Stettin). Studied at Universität Leipzig (enrollment on January 20, 1739) and was J.S. Bach's student. He studied in Halle (Saale) (enrolled on March 31, 1740). From 1744 to 1775 he worked as organist at the Marienkirche in Rügenwalde;.
In connection with his application to Rügenwalde, Martin Tesmer is reported to have "in Leipzig bey dem berühmten Organisten Herrn Bachen die Musik gelernt" (learned the music from the famous organist Mr. Bach in Leipzig).
