The German composer, Johannes Stomius (Greek form) or Mulinus (latin form), was born as Johannes Mühling or Muhling. Unfortunately we do not know much about his life, because the situation of the sources is not satisfying and the secondary literature is inconsistent. We know some important details after a quotation of Stomius epitaph, citied in “Io. Georgii Schelhornii, De Religionis Evangelicae in Provincia Salisburgensi ortu progressu et fatis commentatio Historico (sic) ecclesiastica” of 1732, which is the most fertile source.
In this history of the beginnings of Protestantism in Salzburg Schelhorn is talking about a headmaster (ludimoderator) named Johannes Mulinus. Schelhorns source is the “Prosographia virorum illustrorum” of Heinrich Pantaleon of 1565, a description of the life and work of famous men. Pantaleon tells that he has known the widow of Stomius. The epitaph, which Stomius might have written on his own speaks of a certain Joannes Stomius vulgo Mulinus who has spent his life in teaching children.
As an adult Stomius went to Salzburg founding a school for poetry, a Latin school influenced by the ideas of humanism. The cardinal of Salzburg, Matthäus Lang (1468-1540) was a patron of fine arts and friend of famous humanists. We do not know anything about the musical education of Stomius, but he was a friend of the composer and organist Paul Hofhaimer who composed Latin odes after Horace for him.
