Johann Christoph Schmidt (Organ, Copyist, Bach's Pupil)

Born: October 26, 1691 - Harzgerode, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Died: May 25, 1765 - Harzgerode, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany

Johann Christoph Schmidt was born the son of Lorenz Schmidt (farmer in Harzgerode). From 1713 he was an organist at St. Marienkirche in Harzgerode; and from 1719 also princely copyist and town clerk in Harzgerode.

Löffler described Johann Christoph Schmidt as J.S. Bach's pupil in Weimar based on his signature on a copy of the piano prelude BWV 921: "d. Joh. Ch. Schmidt Hartz. p. t. org. d. 9 9br 1713". J.C. Schmidt was already employed as an organist in Harzgerode at this time, but he could actually have been J.S. Bach's student shortly before. Alberto Basso also lists J.C. Schmidt as a musician who may have studied with J.S. Bach.
