Wilhelm Ferdinand Baron von Lyncker was the son of Nikolaus Christoph Freiherr von Lyncker from Marburg (1643-1726), a German professor of law in Gießen and in Jena, and later Imperial Court Councilor in Vienna. Around 1710 he worked as Ducal Chamberlain (Kammerjunker) at the Weimar ducal court during the period J.S. Bach served there as organist (1708-1714). They have become acquainted and probably close friends, because J.S. Bach chose Lyncker as the godfather of his elder son Wilhelm Friedemann Bach, who was born on November 22, 1710.
Because of the baptism sponsorship for W.F. Bach taken over by Lyncker in 1710, Hans-Joachim Schulze suspected that he could also have been a student of J.S. Bach. For another Weimar noble in a comparable position, Adam Friedrich Wilhelm von Jagemann (A-5), the student relationship is documented by invoice entries. In the case of Lyncker, there is no corresponding evidence.
