Johann Sebastian Koch was a German musician. He attended the school in Mühlhausen; around 1704-1709 he attended the school in Blankenburg (Harz); around 1709-1711 he attended the school in Mühlhausen (choir prefect). It was assuned that he was one of J.S. Bach's first pupils at Mühlhausen in 1708, and served as choir prefect there until 1710. He marticulated at the University of Jena on April 16, 1711, obtaining his Baccalaureus degree in 1712. In 1712 he was engaged as court Kantor and as a bass singer in Hofkapelle in Schleiz; from 1719 he was Figuralkantor; from 1727 he was also Hofkapelldirektor/Kappelmeister there.
Löffler's statements about Johann Sebastian Koch: "1708 Chorpräfekt S. Bachs in Mühlhausen" (1708 choir prefect S. Bach in Mühlhausen" (1929/31), "wirkte mit Bach an Divi Blasii, half mit Schubart dessen Notenvorrat ergänzen" (worked with Bach on Divi Blasii, helped with Schubart to supplement his stock of notes" (1953) are surely based on misinterpreted data from Walther's Lexikon or conjectures. Since J.S. Koch was in Mühlhausen only after J.S. Bach's departure and, moreover, cannot be verified as a J.S. Bach scribe, he will not be considered a J.S. Bach'S pupil either. An encounter between J.S. Koch and J.S. Bach can nevertheless be assumed in the vicinity of J.S. Bach's visit to Schleiz in 1721.
