Christian David Graff (Composer, Organ) |
Born: March 7, 1700 - Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany
Died: March 5, 1774 - Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany |
Christian David Graff was born the son of Johann Christoph Graff (organist at St. Johannis in Magdeburg). H was trained by his father and by the music director Christiani in Magdeburg. From 1714 he attended the Gymnasium (at the Grauen Kloster?) in Berlin and was a pupil of the Nikolai organist Adrian Lutterodt. Around 1715/1716 he stayed in Magdeburg; from 1716 he attended the Gymnasium in Eisenach and was a pupil of the organist Johann Bernhard Bach [18]. From 1719 until his death in 1774, he worked as organist at Kirche St. Ulrich und Levin in Magdeburg (until 1720 as a substitute). His survived works are for organ.
The fact that Christian David Graff was considered as a J.S. Bach's pupil is obviously due to a confusion between J.S. Bach and the Eisenach organist Johann Bernhard Bach [18] (1676-1749). The actual teacher was given by Löffler in 1929/1931 on the basis of Graff's autobiography published by Marpurg in 1757.
