History & Mission: |
Le festival Jean-Sébastien Bach de Saint-Donat (the Bach Festival of Saint-Donat), was established in 1962, due to the initiative of a donator, doctor Henri Lémonon, music lover and admirer of J.S. Bach. Soon enough, the event enjoyed a great success. The brilliant organist Marie-Claire Alain, was invited in 1962 for a big concert in October and then annually thereafter, naturally became the artistic advisor. Year after year, the festival gained momentum, as to constitute a reference to the music of J.S. Bach.
During January 2006, at the request of the mayor of Saint-Donat who did not support the new project of the host association, the creation of Bach en Drôme des Collines was decided. This alternative plan was to make known the music of J.S. Bach, of his contemporaries and successors to the current composers, to animate the northern department and create a dynamic educational involving college and music school of the city. These topics were discussed at length with Marie-Claire Alain, who encouraged the small team gathered around Jean-Claude Gélus, Henri Garelli and Jean-François Gay. Born of a break, "Bach in Drome des Collines" is however, part of the continuity of the Festival Jean-Sébastien Bach de Saint-Dona, with a return to fundamental music, but especially with a desire for renewal. |
