Luis Yo (Tenor)

Born: South Korea

The Soiuth Korean-born tenor, Luis Gangjai Yo, was raised in Asuncion, Paraguay and New York. He earned his Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance & Literature also with a full scholarship award from Eastman School of Music the University of Rochester under the tutelage of Dr. Robert H. McIver (2004), and his Master of Music degree in Classical Voice with Opera Performance from Yale University School of Music Opera with a full scholarship award under the guidance of Richard and Doris Cross. He participated in master-classes with Ken Noda, Jonathan Friend, Jerry Hadley, Allan Held, Lucine Amara, Sylvia Anderson, James Schwabacher, Ken Benson, Duane Printz, and Roger Brunyate. Yo currently study voice with Maestro Francisco Casanova. He received numerous awards including The MacAllister Opera Award, the Legally Memorial Award from Annapolis Opera, Shreveport Opera Robinson Award, Bissel Scholarship Award, George Eastman Award, and George Peabody Award. He was a finalist of the Opera Index, Palm Beach Opera, Violetta Dupont, and New Jersey Verismo Opera. He is fluent in Spanish, Korean, and English.

Luis Yo has performed with Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, New Haven Symphony, Janiec Opera Company, Opera at Florham, Dicapo Opera, Rochester Mercury Opera, Eastman Opera, and Yale Opera. He has appeared in fully staged opera leading roles as Alfredo in La Traviata, Tamino in The Magic Flute, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, and Valere in Tartuffe. He was tenor soloist in Credo by Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki under composer’s baton. His other orchestral solo appearance were F. Mendelssohn’s Elijah, L.v. Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Mozart’s C minor Mass, Schubert’s E flat Mass, J.S. Bach’s Magnificat (BWV 243), and St. Nicolas Mass by Haydn.

Luis Yo recently was tenor soloist with Toronto Canadian Symphony for their production of Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 Lobgesang. In operatic field, he was principal solo artist with New York City Opera participating in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte under the direction of Maestro Julius Rudel. Yo made his international opera debut in Italy with prestigious “la verdi’ Orchestra e Coro Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi singing the role of Lysander in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and returned to the Auditorium di Milan again to perform the role of Azaël in the opera L’enfant prodigue by Debussy.
