The Würzburger Madrigalchor currently consists of around 40 active singers and is dedicated to demanding vocal music. They develop around three to four interesting and varied a cappella programs a year, which are performed in Würzburg and the surrounding area. They are happy to combine works from a wide variety of epochs and styles in order to discover new things in the connection and contrast between “old” and contemporary choral music.
The Würzburger Madrigalchor is a mixed chpoir. Every age group is represented, from “well-sung members” who have remained loyal to the choir for decades, to students who enjoy singing. They are an open community. Everyone who has a basic musical and vocal understanding and enjoys making concentrated music with nice people is very welcome.
As a non-profit association, the Würzburger Madrigalchor is not tied to any institution. It therefore lives solely from the commitment of its members. They finance themselves from a membership fee as well as concert income and donations: statutes and association rules. |
Würzburger Madrigalchor celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019.
In 1978, under the direction of Karl Kronthaler, high school students from the Röntgengymnasiums formed a male choir, which in 1979 became a mixed choir, the Chor des Röntgengymnasiums. The ensemble, which had just been launched, soon had considerable successes to show for it; it immediately won the choir competition Bayerns Jugend singt. In 1981 the first concert took place under the new name Würzburger Madrigalchor.
In 1994 Matthias Göttemann took over the ensemble. Under his direction, the musical quality increased enormously and the choir, with its lively concert activity, soon became a fixture in Würzburg's diverse choral landscape. At the end of 2010, Johannes Strauss took over the choir and developed it, especially vocally and vocal technique, so that the choir was able to benefit significantly as a homogeneous ensemble.
After Volker Hagemann, who directed the choir from autumn 2015 to the end of 2019, Mirja Betzer started under difficult conditions in February 2020 (Covid-19 pandemic). So far, despite intensive rehearsals, they have not been allowed to perform under her direction, which they now want to make up for in July 2021. |
