Dominik Wortig (Tenor)

Born: Neuwied am Rhein, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany

The German tenor, Dominik Wortig, received his first musical training aged 5. He studied church music and then voice with Werner Lechte at the Robert Schumann High School in Düsseldorf. He also benefited from studies with Brigitte Fassbaender, Ingeborg Hallstein, Reinhard Leisenheimer and Kurt Moll.

Today Dominik Wortig is in demand internationally as an opera and concert singer, at well known festivals and in recording studios for CD's and broadcasts. He has been a member of the opera ensembles at Hagen and Wuppertal Operas, and performed as a guest artist at the Stuttgart Opera and the National Opera of Saxony in Dresden, among others, and has performed virtually all the most important lyric tenor roles. He has also added a selection heavier tenor roles to his repertoire. He has worked with conductors including Lothar Zagrosek, Dennis Russell Davies, Thomas Hengelbrock, Herbert Blomstedt and Michael Gielen and performed concert repertoire ranging from the Monteverdi's Vespers and J.S. Bach to the great oratorios of the romantic and modern periods, as well as a number of world premiéres. His stylistic versatility and exceptional talent have led to one critic describing him as "on the way to becoming one of the great tenors of our times." He has also been influenced by an unusually close and successful cooperation with Helmuth Rilling and the International Bach Academy Stuttgart.

Besides numerous Lieder recitals with the pianist Xannick Wirner, upcoming projects include L.v. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis under Herbert Blomstedt, Felix Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise with Christopher Hogwood for RAI in Turin, Franz Liszt's Missa Solemnis with Philippe Herreweghe, as well as F. Mendelssohn's Elijah and St. Paul with the International Bach Academy under Helmuth Rilling at the Rheingau Music Festival, the Musikfest Stuttgart and the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival. In addition he is due to record Richard Strauss’ German Motet with the Rundfunkchor Berlin under Michael Gläser for CD, and Romberg’s The Student Prince under John Mauceri for West German Radio. He is due to début at the Theatro alla Scala in Milan as the Helmsman in Richard Wagner’s The Flying Dutchman.

In 2012, Dominik Wortig took up a teaching position at the Leopold-Mozart-Zentrum der Universität Augsburg. Among the singers who have studied with him and/or attended his master-classes: Manuel Ried (Tenor).
