The German soprano, Johanna Winkel, studied piano and cello already in elementary school, and during her school years played in some regional orchestras and sang in the Westfälischen Kammerchor under the direction of Rainer Winkel. Since 2001 she has participated in various concerts and recordings of the Kölner Kammerchor under the direction of Peter Neumann. In 2002-2004 She was a member of the Kammerchor Stuttgart and the 16-soloists ensemble conducted by Frieder Bernius. In 2002, she began to study singing with Mechthild Böhme at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold, and continued her studies there in 2004 with Professor Caroline Thomas. She has taken part in master-classes with Christa Ludwig, Christina Scheppelmann, the King’s Singers, Ralf Popken and at the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin. In 2005 she received a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Foundation.
In July 2005 and June 2006 she sang in the Hochschule productions at the Landestheater Detmold the role of Mimi in La Boheme by G. Puccini, and appeared in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni as Donna Elvira. In 2006-2007 season she had a guest engagement at the Landestheater Detmold. In the summer of 2008, she sang part of Micaela in Carmen in the context of her diploma.
Johanna Winkel has won many prizes in opera. At the end of 2007, she was Prize-winner at the NRW Competition, and in 2006 was finalist at the National Singing Competition in Berlin. She was also a semi-finalist in the Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna and won first prize in the international Cantilena Singing Competition in Bayreuth in 2009.
Johanna Winkel enjoys a busy career in both concert and oratorio where she is much in demand as a soloist. She has made several solo CD's. |
