The Americanm baritone and music teacher, Andrew D. Whitfield, received the Bachelor of Music degree from Butler University in Indianapolis (1997), the Master of Music degree from Wichita State University in Kansas (2000), and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from Louisiana State University (2004). His awards include: Finalist, Naftzger Young Artist Auditions & Music Awards, Wichita (1998); Samuel Ramey Opera Fellowship, Wichita State University (1998-1999); Graduate Assistantship, Louisiana State University (2001-2003); Baton Rouge Opera Guild Career Grant (2001-2003); Baton Rouge Music Club, Edith Kirkpatrick Scholarship (2002).
Andrew Whitfield enjoys a vibrant career as a performer, teacher, and stage director. In addition to appearances with Des Moines Metro Opera, Opera Southwest, and Pensacola Opera, he has also been a resident artist with Portland Opera Works. His other performance highlights include engagements with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, and the Peoria Bach Festival. His recording of Brooke Joyce’s Three Iowa Ballads, released on the Innova label, has received notable praise. In 2011, he was the baritone soloist in the Johannes Brahms' Requiem at Grinnell College, and he also sang the baritone solos in Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass at Luther College and in Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis. In March 2012, he was the baritone soloist in the world-premiere performance of Mohammed Fairouz's Anything Can Happen with the Grinnell College Singers at Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, Illinois.
Andrew Whitfield currently serves as Associate Professor of Music at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he teaches applied voice and opera workshop. He is also a co-founder and co-director of the International Music Festival of the Adriatic, a summer chamber music festival for piano, strings, voice, and composition in Duino, Italy. With his Luther colleague Jessica Paul, he has performed Schubert’s celebrated cycle Winterreise numerous times, including in Colorado, Iowa, and Wisconsin during February and March of 2011, and also in Texas in January of 2014. He currently lives in Decorah, Iowa. |
