The German tenor, Johannes Weiss, studied viola da gamba and harpsichord before switching to singin. As an instrumentalist, he successfully took part in several chamber music competitions from 2001 to 2005: Van Wassenaer Den Haag, Biago-Marini Neuburg/Donau, The Polytechnical Society Frankfurt am Main and Alte Musik Treff Berlin. From 2002 to 2006 he studied classical singing with Hedwig Fassbender at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst (Conservatory for Music and Performing Arts) in Frankfurt am Main. While there he attended master classes with Emma Kirkby, Christoph Prégardien, Ernst Haefliger, David Wilson-Johnson, Guillemette Laurens and Thomas Heyer. During his time at the Conservatory in Frankfurt, he also won the scholarship of the Yehudi-Menuhin-Foundation.
Johannes Weiss was member of the Freies Landestheater Bayern from 2002 to 2004 and performed in the world premiere of Lola Montez by Peter Kreuder, among other works. In 2006-2007 season he was a member of Atelier Lyrique at the Opéra National de Paris, and he has been teaching historical performance practice at the Hochschule für Musik in Mannheim since 2008.
As a concert singer, Johannes Weiss specializes in early music pieces before J.S. Bach as well as the 18th century oratory repertoire.
