The Dutch tenor, Alex Vermuelen, studied at College van het H. Kruis Uden (1964-1970). He obtained his Bachelor of Music and soloist degree C in Singing and Opera from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam (1972-1980 or 1974-1980); and his Master of Music degree (with higest distinction) in Singing from the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles (1984-1986 or 1982-1985).
Alex Vermeulen is an independent music professional since 1973. In the second academic year of his education in Amsterdam, he debuted at the opening concert of Amsterdam 700 and became a much sought-after soloist during his singing studies. He sang with the Nederlandse Opera, Vlaamse Opera, and Opera van Wallonië, with operas by Verdi, Puccini, Wagner and Dvorak, but also in Salome (Strauss), The Consul (Menotti), Die Gezeichneten (Schreker), Escorial (Levy) , Lavinia (Barraud), Death in Venice and Rape of Lucretia (Benjamin Britten), Oedipus Rex (Igor Stravinsky) and in operas by Haydn and W.A. Mozart.
Alex Vermeulen built up an extensive concert repertoire, from works like L.v. Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 and the Requiem Masses by Verdi, Berlioz and Dvorak to more modern works such as Golgotha (Martin), Les Noces (I. Stravinsky) - a.o. at the National Ballet - and works by Schnittke, Lutoslawsky (including the 12-tone work Paroles Tissées) and Arvo Pärt. By Ennio Morricone he sang the world premiere of his passion-oratorium Una Via Crucis. He has sung with such conductors as Edo de Waart, van Steen, Stulen, Bakels, Vis, Soudant, Ros Marba, Badea, Soustrot, Markovsky, Zollman, Bartholomée, Jean-François Pailliard, Gribanov, Shpiller, Tabachnik, Panteleev and Frantz. He has made many radio and TV recordings throughout Europe as far as Russia and recorded several CD's, including the Charles Gounod's Caeciliamis, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, J.S. Bach's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244), Verdi's Requiem, Franz Liszt's Stabat Mater, Arvo Pärt's Stabat Mater, and Schubert's Winterreise.
At the centenary of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam Alex Vermuelen sang at the Concertgebouw (in which he alone performed more than 150 times solo) in the presence of the royal family L'Enfant Prodigue by Debussy. In the autumn of 2005 he sang as a soloist at the wedding of Prince Floris and Aimée, which was broadcast by the NOS. He has performed at prestigious festivals such as the Morvan Festival, Consonances St. Nazaire, Chamber Music Festival Schiermonnikoog and the Finca Festival Gran Canaria.
Alex Vermeulen was Artistic Director of Muziekfestival West-Brabant (1990-2000). He is Owner of CME Music (since September 1992). CME Music is an organisation bureau of classical music concerts and at the same time represents a small group of excellent musicians. CME Music represented a number of musicians for performances during the Music Festival West-Brabant, concerts of Hét Concertkoor and the chamber music series of the Foundation HCK Kamermuziek. He is also Artistic director Het Concertkoor in Bergen op Zoom (since August 1994); Chairman of Stichting HCK Kamermuziek (since November 2009); Artistic Director (concert programs and music) of Stichting Symphony aan de Schelde (since July 2018) |
