Kannan Vasudevan (Tenor)

Born: Greensburg, Pennsylvania, USA

The American tenor, Kannan Vasudevan, obtained his , Bachelor of Artsdegree in German Studies from Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut (May 2001); and his Master of Education degree in Foreign Language Education from University of Virginia in Charlottesville (January 2007). He also studied at the Bowdoin Summer Music Festival in Brunswick (Summer 1998); Aspen Music Festival (Summer 1999); Abroad at Wesleyan University Program in Regensburg, Germany (January-July 2000); and French Immersion Program at Middlebury College French School (Summer 2003). He was a winner of the Wesleyan University Concerto Competition.

Kannan Vasudevan has performed in opera and oratorio from the Baroque to contemporary music. Highlights of his stage experience include the title role in The Play of Daniel (Church of the Transfiguration in New York, December 2011) Dance Master in Ariadne auf Naxos (Brooklyn Repertory Opera, December 2009), Monostatos in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (May 2009), and Fame in Purcell’s The Indian Queen (Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey, August 2010) He was praised as “lively” (Opera News) for his portrayal of Tonik in Smetana’s Two Widows and “sang sweetly” (Opera Magazine) for his performance as Pronin in Inessa Zaretsky’s Man in a Black Coat. He plays multiple roles in Kamala Sankaram’s Thumbprint, which premiered at the 2014 Prototype Festival in New York and was remounted to wide acclaim at LA Opera in 2017.

An accomplished concert soloist, Kannan has sung the First Elder in George Frideric Handel’s Susanna, the Evangelist in J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), G.F. Handel’s Messiah, W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Camille Saint-SaënsChristmas Oratorio, David Lang’s Battle Hymns, and numerous cantatas and motets by Benjamin Britten, J.S. Bach, Heinrich Schütz, and Charpentier. He recently appeared as Jesus in A Jazz Passion with its composers, noted jazz musicians Andy Tecson, Bobby Schiff, and Bobby Lewis.

His opera company appearances include Beth Morrison Projects, Little Opera Theatre of NY, American Chamber Opera Company, and Bronx Opera, and such concert groups as the Collegiate Chorale, Hudson Valley Singers, Long Island Choral Society, Choral Chameleon, Cantata Singers, and Choeur Régional Provence.

As a professional chorister, Kannan Vasudevan has performed with numerous ensembles in the New York City area, including the New York Virtuoso Singers, Bard Festival Chorale, New York Choral Artists, Bach Choir of Holy Trinity Lutheran, and St. Bartholomew’s Summer Festival Choir.
