The American tenor, Gene Tucker, was raised as an evangelical in a Baptist church for most of his youth, his very early life was nurtured in the Methodist and Lutheran traditions. When he became a member of the Army Band in Washington, he soon became tenor soloist at the Washington National Cathedral, and it was there that he discovered the richness of the Anglican worship service as the Episcopal Church (the branch of the worldwide Anglican Communion in this country) maintains it. His background in Bible studies enabled him to see that the Anglican worship service is deeply rooted in Scripture, its verses intertwined throughout the liturgy.
For most of his musical career, Gene Tucker was a member of the U. S. Army Band in Washington, D.C., where he was soloist with the band and a member of the U.S. Army Chorus, the last all-male choral ensemble in the armed forces. As a professional musician, he was blessed to have a civilian singing career in addition to his military musical activities, a career that took him to venues all over the USA and abroad, singing as soloist mostly with symphony orchestras and major choral societies.
Following his retirement from a 28 year military career, Gene Tucker was ordained as an Episcopal priest in March, 2005. Earlier, he also served on active duty as an infantryman with the 29th Infantry Division (Light), Virginia Army National Guard. He is married to the former Deborah Kinney, who is a native of Washington, D. C. Their family includes two grown daughters, both of whom live in Baltimore, Maryland, and two granddaughters. When time permits, he enjoys bicycle riding, railroading and old fire trucks. |
