The American counter-tenor, Matthew Truss, studied at Broad Ripple High School in Indianapolis (1998-2002). He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree from Boston Conservatory with an emphasis in opera performance (2002-2006) and studies with Victor Jannett. Competitively, he was the recipient of many awards and a two-time finalist in the New England Regional Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. In 2006, he won New England Encouragement Award. In 2008, he received the Jerry Hadley Award in the Elardo International Opera Competition in Bruges, Belgium.
Matthew Truss worked as a frelance counter-tenor, orchestral soloist, recitalist, and teaching artist since 2006. He garnered critical acclaim both nationally and internationally on the concert and opera stage. Praised for his “mellifluous voice and ebullient manner,” he made his mark as a young countertenor whose “precocious” voice “boasted both beauty and volume.” To his credit were the opera roles of Akhnaten (Glass), Oberon in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Belize in Péter Eötvös' Angels in America, and the premiere roles of Rev. Eli Hunt in We Are Sons (Rojahn), and The Miller in Rumpelstiltskin (Epstein).
In 2011-2012 season, Matthew Truss debuted Berlioz' Les nuits d’été as a recurring artist with the Orchestra of Indian Hill, performed the works of Francis Poulenc, Henri Duparc, Charles Ives and R. Strauss in recital, presented Um Mitternacht from Gustav Mahler’s Fünf Rückertlieder with the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble, and premiered the role of Perforated in Vine’s Loose, Wet, Perforated with Guerilla Opera. Recent performances include international tours with the American Spiritual Ensemble (Lexington, Kentucky), concerts with National Chorale (New York City, New York), Coro Lutero King (São Paulo, Brazil), the Lexington Symphony (Lexington, Massachusetts) and the Orchestra of Indian Hill (Littleton, Massachusetts).
Matthew Truss was Alto Section Leader at First Parish Cambridge Unitarian Universalist in Cambridge, Massachusetts (September 2011-August 2016), and Staff Singer - Alto I at Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City (September 2016-September 2017). He was also featured soloist with the American Spiritual Ensemble (from January 2011).
Matthew Truss worked as Assistant Director for Faculty Development Programming (November 2006-September 2011), and Teaching Artist Voice (September 2011-June 2016) at Berklee College of Music in Boston. He then was Teaching Artist at National Chorale at Professional Performing Arts School (from September 2016), and Metropolitan Opera Guild (from January 2017). |
