Ute Trekel-Burckhardt (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: November 11, 1939 - Pirna, Saxony, Germany

The German mezzo-soprano, Ute Trekel-Burckhardt, studied at the Musikhochschule of Berlin, where she was a pupil of Rita Meinl-Weise.

Ute Trekel-Burckhardt made her stage debut in 1963 at the Komischen Oper Berlin as Page in Salome by R. Strauss. In the same year she was accepted as a member to the ensemble of this house, at worked there for many years. In 1972 she participated in the premiere of Noch einen Löffel Gift, Liebling? by S. Matthus. Since 1975 she is engaged as a member of the Staatsoper Berlin, and also appears regularly as a guest at the Staatsoper Dresden. She has performed the big classical alto roles on the opera stage, as well as the mezzo-soprano parts, and was considered particularly as great interpreter the opera works of Verdi and Richard Strauss. One of her glorious roles was Octavian in the Rosenkavalier. Guest appearances brought her to the State Operas of Vienna and Munich, to the Royal Opera Copenhagen, to the Opera of Köln, the Theater of Bonn (1984 as Renata in Feurigen Engel by Prokofiev), to the State Theatres of Karlsruhe (1987 as Kundry in Parsifal) and Wiesbaden (1988 as Ortrud in Lohengrin), and other important theatres. In 1985 she sang as a guest the role of Queen Marguerite at the Opera of Nancy in Arnold Schoenberg's dramatic monologue Erwartung. In 1985 she sang in the Munich's premiere of the opera Le roi to Béranger by H. Sutermeister. In 1986 she appeared as a guest with the Berlin State Opera at the Festival of Las Palmas (Venus in Tannhäuser). She could be heard as a guest in Amsterdam (1980) and Bologna (1981), at the Teatro Liceo Barcelona (1981, 1986), at the Teatro Colón Buenos Aires (1986), at the Opera of Bordeaux (1986) and at the Théâtre de la Monnaie Brussels (1980). In 1990 she appeared at the Berlin State Opera as Azucena in Troubadour, as Amneris in Aida"and as the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos by R. Strauss, in 1993 as Küsterin in Jenufa, in 1991 at the Deutschen Oper Berlin as Ortrud, in 1995 at the Opera House of Graz as Klytaemnestra in Elektra by R. Strauss. Just as successful is also her expanded concert repertoire.

Ute Trekel-Burckhardt is married with the bass singer Jürgen Trekel, who sang at the Theater of Halle/Saale and at the Komischen Oper Berlin.
