The American mezzo-soprano, music pedagogue and stage director, Lynn Torgove, began her career as an actress and classical opera singer. As a mezzo-soprano, she toured Europe, North America and Japan, working with some of the world’s most renowned directors and conductors and recording on the Erato and Telarc labels.
Lynn Torgove has been a member of Cantata Singers’ chorus for many years. She has been a featured soloist with the Cantata Singers, most recently as the alto soloist in J.S. Bach’s Lutheran Mass in F (BWV 233), and last season, in the role of Maurya in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea and the second soprano soloist in J.S. Bach’s Mass in B minor (BWV 232). She has also appeared as a soloist with Boston Lyric Opera, Emmanuel Music, Boston Camerata, Aston Magna, Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, Portland Symphony Orchestra, Tallahassee Symphony, Springfield Symphony (Ohio), American Repertory Theater, Berkshire Choral Festival, and the Masterworks Chorale.
Lynn Torgove was an original member of the Peter Sellars/Craig Smith production of The Marriage of Figaro, broadcast on PBS. Other operatic roles include the Son/Juniper Bird in the world premiere of the Philip Glass/Robert Moran opera, The Juniper Tree, Eurydice in Glass' Orphee and Polly Peachum in The Threepenny Opera with the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge. Recent engagements have included a national tour with the Boston Camerata, performances and recording of Lukas Foss' Griffelkin with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, on the Chandos label, and a Telarc recording, Fourth River, with Tapestry. In 2008 she appeared in and helped to create Through the Shining Glass: a Commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of Kristallnacht in Providence, Rhode Island. She is also well known as a recitalist, performing with pianist Kayo Iwama, and most recently touring in a series of concerts performing and premiering works by John Harbison and Andy Vores.
Lynn Torgove has since expanded her career to include opera and theater direction, and she has over 15 years’ experience teaching acting, stage movement and vocal studies at New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory, and the Boston University Tanglewood (Opera) Institute as stage director, Tufts University, Brandeis University, and the Walnut Hill School for the Arts (where she was Director of the Vocal Program and Opera Ensemble). She is currently on the faculties of Longy School of Music and Hebrew College School of Jewish Music (since 2005).
As a stage director, Lynn Torgove has directed Menotti’s Amahl and the Night Visitors for MIT, Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress, Benjamin Britten’s The Little Sweep, Hans Krása’s opera Brundibár, A Kurt Weill Cabaret, and most recently, B. Britten’s Noye’s Fludde, all with Cantata Singers. She has also directed the premiere of Edward Cohen’s The Bridal Night with Collage New Music, John Harbison’s Full Moon in March, Lukas Foss’ Griffelkin with Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and Gianni Schicchi at the Boston University Opera Institute. She has been the stage director of Opera New England/Boston Lyric Opera’s productions of The Magic Flute, The Daughter of the Regiment, and The Barber of Seville. As a recipient of the Gideon Klein Fellowship from Northeastern University, she created, produced, directed and performed in the cabaret Frauenstimmen: Women’s Voices from the Ravensbrück Concentrataion Camp at the Fenway Center in Boston.
Lynn Torgove is the co-founder of Gabriel Associates, a presentation skills consulting firm. She recently received her Masters in Jewish Studies and in June 2012 was ordained as a Cantor from Hebrew College in Newton, Massachusetts. |
