Magda Tiszay (Contralto)

Born: April 4, 1919 - Békéscsaba, Hungary
Died: December 27, 1989 - München, Germany

Tiszay Magda was one of the leading altos in Hungary after World War II. She made her first debut in 1944 at the National Opera House in Budapest as Mirabella in Der Zigeunerbaron by J. Strauss. She sang in numerous operas of Borodin, Verdi, Rossini, Gluck, Kodaly and Georges Bizet, as well as performing various liturgical musical masterpieces. She was awarded several prestigious national prizes such as The Kossuth Award in 1957. Her voice was deep, dramatic and characterized by an individual style.

In 1962, Tiszay Magda moved to West Germany, where unfortunately her career deteriorated dramatically and hence, she abandoned singing.
