The Italian mezzo-soprano and singing teacher, Lidia Tirendi, was born in Catania. After the secondary school diploma in Humanities, she graduated with honors from the Reggio Calabria Conservatory of Music majoring in piano and opera singing. During this period she had the chance to practise and improve her skills under the guide of Fedora Barbieri, mezzo-soprano. After being a finalist and awarded in many competitions during 1991, she won the first prize at the 3rd International Selection of the Del Monaco award of Marsala, at the International Bellini Competition in Spoleto and at the International Neglia Competition.
Lidia Tirendi made her debut in Germany as Mamma Lucia in Cavalleria Rusticana, and later she sang in operas like G. Rossini’s L’Italiana in Algeri (Zulma), in U. Giordano’s Mese Mariano and G. Puccini’s Suor Angelica (Zia Principessa) at Teatro del Giglio in Lucca. At Teatro La Fenice in Venice she made her debut in Les contes d'Hoffmann by J. Offenbach as Antonia's Mother, which she later performed at Teatro Alla Scala in Milan (S. Ramey, conductor Riccardo Chailly) and at Teatro San Carlo in Naples (conductor P. Maag). At La Fenice in Venice she sang the Queen Mother in Turandot by Ferruccio Busoni (Premio Abbiati 1994), Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridiceby C. Gluck, Enrichetta in Puritani by V. Bellini (Devia, conductor N. Santi), Teresa in Sonnambula by V. Bellini (conductor M. Arena), also in the tour in Poland, Madame Butterfly by G. Puccini (conductor T. Severini), Falstaff by G. Verdi (as Quikly) (J. Pons, R. Panerai, director: R. De Simone) and inaugurated the 1997-1998 season with Gazza Ladra by G. Rossini (conductor G. Andretta), recorded on CD.
Lidia Tirendi made her debut as Azucena in Trovatore by G.Verdi and in Genoa she sang in Traviata by G. Verdi (M. Devia,conductor Daniel Oren) and in Il Natale del Redentore by L. Perosi directed under Gianandrea Gavazzeni. Later on she sang Madelon in Andrea Chenier by U. Giordano at Rome's Opera House (N. Martinucci, A. Millo), Fenena in Nabucco by G. Verdi at Teatro Coccia in Novara and at Arena Sferisterio in Macerata. (R. Bruson, director R. Giacchieri), Azucena in Trovatore in Fano, and then came back to Teatro Alla Scala in Milan to sing Cieca in Gioconda by A. Ponchielli at (conductor Roberto Abbado), a role she also sang at Deutsche Oper Berlin (conductor Marcello Viotti, Eva Marton, A. Cupido), Cavalleria Rusticana by P. Mascani (as Santuzza) at Teatro Comunale in Treviso, Teatro Sociale in Rovigo and Teatro San Carlo in Naples (director M. Monicelli). Later she went to Venice for Quickly in Falstaff, Rome Opera for Donizetti's Messa da Requiem under Gelmetti, and Naples for Lola in Cavalleria Rusticana and Antonia's Mother in The Tales of Hoffmann. Recently she has sung, aside Renato Bruson, Fenena in Nabucco in Macerata,. Recently, she was again in Genova for Rigoletto and La Gioconda, in Venice for La Gazza ladra and at La Scala for Linda di Chamounix.
Lidia Tirendi played Sara in Roberto Devereux by G. Donizetti at Teatro S. Carlo Naples, then played Margared in Roy d’Ys by E. Lalo at Grand Theatre in Tours (her debut there), was Maddalena in Verdi’s Rigoletto at Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa and sang as Laura in Gioconda by A. Ponchielli (conductor J. Fiore, with G. Dimitrova, K. Johansson). She came back to Teatro Alla Scala in Milan with Linda di Chamonix by G. Donizetti (Edita Gruberová, G. Sabbatini) and played Cuniza in Verdi's Oberto, Conte di San Bonifacio (conductor G. Andretta), performed where the action had actually taken place (Bassano del Grappa, in the province of Vicenza), she then played Adalgisa in Norma by V. Bellini (F. Cedolins) at Gran Teatro opera house in Malta, at Teatro Sociale in Rovigo (conductor Morandi) and at Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania (director R. Giacchieri, conductor A.Lombard). She made her debut at Verona Arena playing Suzuky in Madame Butterfly by G. Puccini (conductor Carella, D. Dessi, S. Licitra).
In 2000 Lidia Tirendi made several debuts. First as Ulrica in Ballo in Maschera by G. Verdi (M. Crider, N. Schicoff) and as Federica in Luisa Miller by G.Verdi (conductor F. Chaslin) at Deutsche Oper Berlin. Subsequently as Vecchia Buryia in Jenufa by Janaceck at Teatro San Carlo of Naples (conductor Vladimir Jurowski, R.Kabaivanska) and finally as Amneris in “Aida” by G.Verdi at Avanches Festival. In 2001 she played again Ulrica in Ballo in Maschera by G. Verdi at Munich Rundfunks Bayerischen (conductor Marcello Viotti, F. Armiliato, E. Withehouse) and then played Suzuky in Madama Butterfly by G. Puccini at Palafenice in Venice (director: Bob Wilson), which she also performed in 2005 at Teatro Massimo in Catania (conductor A. Veronesi). In 2001 she was directed by Maestro Lorin Maazel in Luisa Miller by G. Verdi (as Federica) in Munich and at Teatro Alla Scala in Milan with Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester (B. Frittoli, V. La Scola). She sang as Santuzza performing with Fedora Barbieri in Cavalleria Rusticana by P. Mascagni at Wielky Theatre in Lodz. In the 2004 and 2005 opera season performed the role of Amneris in Aida by G. Verdi at Oper Leipzig and at Liège opera house. Here she also played Laura in Gioconda by A. Ponchielli.
Apart from the aforementioned carrier as opera singer, Lidia Tirendi also sings a wide concert repertoire and recitals. Notable in her repertory are Gloria by Antonio Vivaldi, Messiah by George Frideric Handel, Cantata BWV 106 by J.S. Bach, Messa di Requiem by Verdi (performed in Resenburg, Germany, and in Enschede, Holland, recorded on CD, also performed in Bologna directed by D. Renzetti, Palermo directed by A. Lombard, directed in 2001 by Marcello Viotti in Goteborg and in Rome, Church of Sant’Andrea della Valle) and Messa di Requiem by G. Donizetti at Rome Opera House (conductor G. Gelmetti), Threni by Igor Stravinsky (conductor G. Ferro and Vladimir Jurowski) at Teatro La Fenice in Venice and at Settimane Musicali Festival in Turin (conductor J. Webb), Mors et Vita by Charles Gounod at Rhingau Musik Festival (conductor Marcello Viotti, B. Frittoli), Alexander Niewsky by Prokofiev at the opening of Stagione Concertistica of Teatro Carlo Felice in Genoa, Messa di Requiem by W.A. Mozart at Vicenza (conductor G.Andretta). Among her recent engagements are Roberto Devereux in Naples, Norma in Catania.
Lidia Tirendi lives in Padua and is currently working at “C. Pollini” Conservatory of Music in Padua, where she teaches opera singing. |
