The German bass, Fred Techler, was born to Friedrich Teschler, who was a chorister at the Dresden Staatsoper. After the World War II, he worked as a journalist. He then completed a vocal training.
Fred Techler made his debut as Bauer (a farmer) in Die Kluge by Carl Orff at the Staatsoper of Dresden in 1955. He remained a member of the opera house for more than twenty years, became Kammersänger in 1965 and took part in the premiere of the opera Vincent by Rainer Kunad in 1979.
Since 1962, Fred Techler gave regularly regular guest performances at the Berlin Staatsoper. He was also a guest at the Komische Oper Berlin, the Stuttgarter Staatsoper, the opera houses of Sofia, Brno, Bucharest, Zürich, Leipzig, Baltimore and Boston as well as at the Salzburg Festival. At the Händel Festival in Halle, he regularly performed as an interpreter of the classical Baroque period.
In addition to his stage repertoire of more than 40 roles, Stuttgarter Staatsoper was a highly esteemed concert and oratorio bass singer. He toured around the world, and traveled to Holland and France, to West Germany and Finland, to Egypt, Syria and Iraq.
Fred Teschler died on July 11, 1997 in Dresden. He is buried at the Loschwitz cemetery.
