Friedl Teller-Blum (Soprano)

Born: June 10, 1932 - Vienna, Austria

The soprano Friedl Teller-Blum was born in Austria as Frieda to the cabaret artist Oskar Teller. After the ‘Anschluss’ and her father’s short-term imprisonment, he family escaped to the USA. Friedl Teller studied at Hunter College and at Columbia University in New York.

Friedl Teller-Blum has performed in public since age 16. She has been cast in more than 40 parts for lyric soprano, and has been especially successful in Madame Butterfly and as Violetta in La Traviata. In 1961 she moved to Israel. She was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Studio, The Volksoper in Vienna, the Städtische Bühnen Münster and the Israel National Opera. Numerous guest appearances at other leading opera houses in Europe. Concerts with all Israeli orchestras and at the Original Abu-Gosh Music Festival (1965). She participated in radio recordings for Kol Israel, Radio Hilversum, RAI, WNYC, records, and in concert tours through Israel, Europe and the USA.

Friedl Teller-Blum has taught voice, vocal literature and diction at the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel-Aviv University from 1976 onwards. From 1985 to 1991 she headed the singers’ department. She lives in Givatayim.
