The American soprano, music teacher and arts administrator, Charlotte Stewart-Juby, studied at Schulich School of Music of McGill University (2011-2017), where she obtained her Bachelor of Music degree and her Master of Music degree in Opera Performance under the tutelage of Dominique Labelle. She was there a member of the Schulich School Singers and Early Music Ensembles, working with conductors including Jordan De Souza, Gordon Gerrard and Boris Brott.
With Opera McGill, Charlotte Stewart-Juby performed the role of Morgana in George Frideric Handel's Alcina, Ida in Die Fledermaus, and in Speed Dating, Tonight!. She was also in the chorus of multiple productions including l'Elisir d'Amore and W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro. She became a frequent performer in her hometown of Kingston, Ontario, where she was seen as the soprano soloist in G.F. Handel's Messiah with Orchestra Kingston. She performed in Kingston in spring 2017 as guest soloist with the Kingston Chamber Choir, followed by a concert of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Mikado with the Kingston Choral Society. She joined Opera Nuova in Edmonton for the first time in summer 2017, singing the titular role in Gilbert and Sullivan's Patience.
Charlotte Stewart-Juby is multi-faceted arts worker, interested in understanding how they an improve art’s engagement with their communities. As the current Manager of Dixon Hall Music School (since October 2018), she manages 20+ teachers and 150+ lessons per week for children living in the Regent Park neighbourhood of Toronto. Their Music School aims to provide a holistic approach to music-learning at subsidized costs to youth that have been historically overlooked by cultural institutions.
Charlotte Stewart-Juby has over five years experience as a freelance classical soprano (since September 2015), having worked with choirs and opera companies in Toronto, Montréal and Kingston. Beginning in October 2019, she amalgamated her interests in opera, education and outreach by joining the Teaching Artist roster with the Canadian Opera Company, where she has travelled throughout the GTA offering introductory workshops to elementary and secondary classes. Hoping to grow as an educator, she is in the beginning phases of growing a private voice studio (since May 2018), where she hopes to create a safe space for people from all walks of life with any musical interests to explore their singing voice.
As someone who values community-based initiatives,she considers volunteering as something central to her work. Since moving to Toronto in 2018, she has volunteered for Against the Grain!, the Fringe Festival, the Junction Farmer’s Market and more. She currently sits on the Programming Committee for Prologue! Performing Arts, which provides professional-level performing arts presentations and workshops for schools on a national level. |
